1 Quando se pretende dizer autocarro — veículo automóvel, com um ou dois pisos, para transporte colectivo de passageiros, e cujo percurso é fixo — utilize BUS:

Budget, Quotation

1 Quando se pretende dizer orçamento, isto é, cálculo de receitas e despesas prováveis na administração de uma casa, empresa ou Estado, utilize BUDGET.
  • The government is expected to announce new taxes and spending cuts in this year's budget.
    Espera-se que o governo anuncie novos impostos e cortes em despesas no orçamento deste ano.
  • The economic situation does not look promising. Some say that many families will be on a tight budget.
    A situação económica não parece prometedora. Alguns dizem que muitas famílias vão estar com o orçamento apertado.
2 Quando se pretende dizer orçamento, isto é, estimativa de uma obra ou reparação de material danificado, utilize QUOTATION.
  • If I were you, I would get two or three quotations from different technicians before deciding what to do with the TV set.
    Se fosse eu, eu obteria dois ou três orçamentos de técnicos diferentes antes de decidir o que fazer com o aparelho de televisão.
  • Would you please give me a quotation for mending the watch?
    Poderia me dar um orçamento para reparar o relógio, por favor?

Break, Interlude, Intermission, ...

1 BREAK significa intervalo, descanso, recreio, pausa (ref. trabalho ou escola):
  • Let's take a break at 10.00, shall we?
    Fazemos uma pausa às 10 horas?
  • He studied for three hours without a break.
    Ele estudou três horas seguidas sem intervalo.
  • Shall we meet during the lunch break?
    Encontramos durante a pausa para o almoço?
2 INTERLUDE significa interlúdio (ref. teatro, musical), ou descanso, intervalo:
  • There will be two ten-minute interludes between the acts.
    Haverão dois interlúdios de dez minutos cada entre os actos.
  • After a hectic week in London, we decided to have an interlude of quiet in the country.
    Depois de uma semana agitada em Londres, decidimos fazer uma pausa para descanso no campo.
3 INTERMISSION significa intervalo:
  • I had an ice cream in the intermission.(1)
    Comi um gelado no intervalo.
  • Our team played better after the intermission.(1)
    A nossa equipa jogou melhor após o intervalo.

    (1) inglês americano (ref. cinema, teatro, desporto, etc.) em vez de interval que é normalmente empregue em inglês britânico
4 INTERVAL significa intervalo:
  • I had a coffee in the interval.(2)
    Tomei um café no intervalo.
  • Manchester United scored a goal before the interval.(2)
    Manchester United marcou um golo antes do intervalo.
  • The interval between the end of the exam and the announcement of the results is about three months.
    O intervalo entre o fim do exame e a fixação dos resultados é cerca de três meses.

    (2) inglês britânico (ref. cinema, teatro, desporto, etc.) em vez de intermission que é normalmente empregue em inglês americano

Beside, Besides

1 BESIDE significa ao lado de, ao pé de, junto a, perto de, próximo de:
  • There is a man sitting beside Mrs. Smith.
    Está um homem sentado ao lado da Sra. Smith.
  • Why don't you sit beside me?
    Porque é que não te sentas ao pé de mim?
  • I usually keep a dictionary beside me when I am reading a difficult text.
    Normalmente tenho um dicionário ao pé de mim quando estou a ler um texto difícil.
2 BESIDES significa além de, além disso:
  • Who is coming, besides John and Mary?
    Quem é que vem mais, além do João e da Maria?
  • Besides being a Maths teacher, she paints as well.
    Além de ser professora de matemática, ela também pinta.
  • Sorry, I don't feel like going to the cinema. Besides, I'm very tired.
    Desculpa, mas não me apetece ir ao cinema. Além disso, estou muito cansado.

Below, Under

1 BELOW significa abaixo de, por baixo, de baixo, em baixo:
  • (em lugar situado em nível inferior)

    The dog bit him in the leg just below the knee.
    O cão mordeu-lhe na perna mesmo por baixo do joelho.

    Eu disse-lhe para não escrever por baixo desta linha.

Begin, Start, Commence

1 BEGIN e START:
  • significam começar ou iniciar
  • têm pouca, ou nenhuma, diferença entre si (embora o verbo begin é um pouco mais formal que o start)
  • podem, na maioria dos casos, ser seguidos de verbos em forma to-infinitive ou -ing (embora esta última é menos utilizada com o verbo begin)

    Exemplos:

    When do we begin / start?
    Quando começamos?

    He began / started teaching / to teach five years ago.
    Ele começou a leccionar há cinco anos atrás.

    They began / started going / to go out together again.
    Eles começaram a sair juntos novamente.

Contudo:
  • quando begin e start se encontram em forma progressiva, somente os verbos em forma to-infinitive os podem seguir:

    Exemplos:

    It is beginning / starting to rain.
    Está a começar a chover.

    I am beginning / starting to wash the dishes.
    Estou a começar a lavar a louça.

    He is beginning / starting to recover his sight.
    Ele está a começar a recuperar a vista.

  • quando begin e start são seguidos de verbos de percepção (ex. see, realise, understand, etc.), estes são empregues somente em forma to-infinitive:

    Exemplos:

    He began / started to see the point of the story.
    Ele começou a perceber o objectivo da história.

    She began / started to realise the seriousness of her mistake.
    Ela começou a perceber a gravidade do seu erro.

    They began / started to understand.
    Eles começaram a compreender.
2 START (e não BEGIN) pode ainda ser empregue em certos contextos:
  • (em máquinas e motores)

    The car won't start.
    O carro não pega.

    I can't start the engine.
    Não consigo pôr o motor a trabalhar.

    I can't start the dishwasher.
    Não consigo pôr a máquina de lavar louça a trabalhar.
  • (em viagens)

    It's going to be a long journey. That's why I'm starting out early in the morning.
    A viagem vai ser longa. É por isso que vou iniciar a viagem de manhã cedo.
3 COMMENCE significa começar ou iniciar, e é empregue em linguagem formal:
  • Shall we commence?
    Comecemos?
  • The meeting may now commence.
    A reunião pode começar agora.
  • The next session commences at 10.30.
    A próxima sessão inicia-se às 10.30.

Avenge, Revenge

1 Quando se pretende dizer vingar em nome de alguém, utilize AVENGE:
  • He killed the man to avenge his mother's death.
    Ele matou o homem para vingar a morte da sua mãe.
  • They avenged the death of their leader by destroying the entire village.
    Eles vingaram a morte do seu líder destruindo a aldeia inteira.
2 Quando se pretende dizer vingar em seu próprio nome, utilize REVENGE:
  • He revenged himself on the man who had shot him in the arm.
    Ele vingou-se do homem que lhe tinha alvejado no braço.
  • He took revenge on them for the suffering they had caused him.
    Ele vingou-se deles pelo sofrimento que lhe tinham causado.

At Present, Presently

1 AT PRESENT significa agora, no momento, presentemente:
  • I'm busy at present. Can I talk to you later?
    Estou ocupado neste momento. Posso falar contigo mais tarde?
  • At present she's living in Lisbon.
    Presentemente, ela encontra-se a viver em Lisboa.
2 PRESENTLY significa logo, em breve, dentro em pouco:
  • Mr. Smith will be here presently.
    O Sr. Smith estará cá dentro em pouco.
  • I'll be with you presently if you don't mind. I have an urgent phone call to make.
    Estarei consigo dentro em pouco se não se importar. Tenho um telefonema urgente a fazer.

Assure, Ensure, Insure

1 ASSURE significa assegurar (dar a garantia):
  • I assure you that everything will be fine.
    Asseguro-te de que tudo irá correr bem.
  • He assured us that it was perfectly safe to cross the bridge.
    He assegurou-nos de que era perfeitamente seguro atravessar a ponte.
2 ENSURE significa assegurar (garantir a concretização de alguma coisa):
  • Please ensure that the doors are all locked before you leave.
    Por favor, assegure-se de que todas as portas estejam trancadas antes de sair.
  • The computer program he wrote ensured his success.
    O programa informático que ele fez assegurou-lhe o sucesso.
3 INSURE significa segurar (fazer contrato de seguro):
  • If you buy a car in Portugal, you have to insure it.
    Se comprares um automóvel em Portugal, tens de o segurar.
  • He insured his life for 50,000 euros.
    Ele fez um seguro de vida de 50.000 euros.

Antisocial, Unsocial, Unsociable

1 ANTISOCIAL significa anti-social (hostil ou prejudicial à sociedade):
  • Vandalism is an example of antisocial behaviour.
    Vandalismo é um exemplo de comportamento anti-social.
  • Smoking in the non-smoking section is considered antisocial.
    É considerado anti-social fumar na secção dos não-fumadores.
2 UNSOCIAL significa fora do horário normal:
  • A nurse usually has to work unsocial hours.
    Uma enfermeira normalmente tem de trabalhar fora do horário normal.
  • Do they pay you more to work unsocial hours?
    Eles pagam-te mais para trabalhar fora do horário normal?
3 UNSOCIABLE significa insociável:
  • He is too unsociable to go to parties.
    Ele é demasiado insociável para ir às festas.
  • He is a very unsociable person. That's why he has so few friends.
    Ele é uma pessoa muito insociável. É por isso que ele tem tão poucos amigos.

Alternately, Alternatively

1 ALTERNATELY significa alternadamente, ora um ora outro:
  • The weather has been alternately hot and cold.
    O tempo tem estado alternadamente calor e frio.
  • The film is alternately sad and amusing.
    O filme é alternadamente triste e divertido.
2 ALTERNATIVELY significa alternativamente, em vez disso, como alternativa:
  • You can go by train, or alternatively go by bus.
    Podes ir de comboio ou, em vez disso, ir de autocarro.
  • You can pay a fine of 500 euros right now, or alternatively spend two months in jail.
    O senhor pode já pagar a multa de 500 euros ou, em alternativa, passar dois meses na cadeia.

Alone, Lonely

1 ALONE significa sozinho (sem mais ninguém):
  • I live alone.
    Vivo sozinho.
  • It is very dangerous to walk alone in this neighbourhood.
    É muito perigoso andar sozinho neste bairro.
  • He usually goes to the cinema alone.
    Ele normalmente vai ao cinema sozinho.
2 LONELY significa só (no sentido de solidão, tristeza):
  • I feel so lonely. I don't have anybody to talk to.
    Sinto-me tão só. Não tenho ninguém com quem falar.
  • He has been very lonely since his wife died.
    Ele tem estado muito só desde que a sua esposa faleceu.
  • He lives in an isolated house and feels very lonely most of the times.
    Ele vive numa casa isolada e sente-se muito só muitas das vezes.

Allow, Let, Permit

1 Quando se pretende dizer permitir, consentir, ou autorizar:
  • em linguagem formal e, por vezes, oficiosa
  • onde se sugere uma autoridade que possa impedir que algo se realize
utilize PERMIT.

Exemplos:
  • I was not permitted access to the company files.
    Não me foi autorizado o acesso aos ficheiros da companhia.
  • They did not permit him to enter the building.
    Eles não lhe autorizaram a entrada no edifício.
  • The prisoner of war was permitted only one meal a day.
    Foi permitido ao prisioneiro de guerra apenas uma refeição por dia.
2 Quando se pretende dizer permitir, deixar, admitir, ou consentir:
  • em linguagem menos formal que a de permit
  • onde se sugere concessão de direitos ou privilégios
utilize ALLOW.

Exemplos:
  • My parents don't allow me to make long-distance calls.
    Os meus pais não me deixam fazer chamadas de longa distância.
  • Her parents allowed her to stay out until two in the morning.
    Os seus pais deixaram-na permanecer fora de casa até às duas de madrugada.
  • The nurse we know allowed us to stay beyond the hospital visiting hours.
    A enfermeira que conhecemos deixou-nos ficar no hospital além das horas de visita.
3 Quando se pretende dizer deixar, permitir, ou consentir:
  • em linguagem menos formal que as de permit e allow
  • onde, por vezes, se sugere a ausência de autoridade preventiva
utilize LET.

Exemplos:
  • Let him in.
    Deixe-o entrar.
  • My parents didn't let me go to the cinema.
    Os meus pais não me deixaram ir ao cinema.
  • How could you let this happen?
    Como pudeste deixar isto acontecer?
  • Why do you let him take advantage of the situation?
    Porque é que o deixas aproveitar-se da situação?

  • auxiliary verb + all
  • determiner + whole + singular noun
  • the whole of + determiner + singular noun
  • the whole of + proper noun
  • a/two/three whole + singular/plural noun
  • whole + plural noun + plural verb
onde:

all = todo, todos, tudo, inteiro
whole = todo, inteiro, total, totalidade
auxiliary verb = am, is, are, have, will, can, may, might, etc.
determiner = the, this, that, these, those, my, your, his, her, etc.
main verb = like, finish, study, drink, work, etc.
object personal pronoun = it, us, you, them
plural noun = children, cars, animals, villages, elephants, etc.
proper noun = Pompeii, Dresden, Sintra, etc.
relative clause = (that) he wanted, (that) you do, etc.
singular noun = life, world, bottle, cake, collection, hour, etc.

Ache, Pain

1 ACHE significa dor contínua e localizada, mas não intensa:
  • I have an ache in the back.
    Tenho uma dor nas costas.
  • This dull ache in my chest is worrying me.
    Esta dor ligeira no meu peito está a preocupar-me.
  • I feel a dull ache at the back of my head.
    Sinto uma dor ligeira atrás da cabeça.
NOTA: ache é normalmente empregue em forma combinada: backache (dor nas costas), earache (dor de ouvidos), headache (dor de cabeça), stomachache (dor de estômago), toothache (dor de dentes).


2 PAIN significa dor física ou sofrimento físico, causado por lesão ou doença:
  • He is in great pain.
    Ele está com dores fortes.
  • Why don't you take this tablet to ease the pain?
    Porque é que não tomas este comprimido para aliviar a dor?
  • The main symptoms of the disease are abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting.
    Os principais sintomas da doença são dores abdominais, náuseas e vómitos.
  • He felt a sharp pain when he accidentally hammered his own thumb.
    Ele sentiu uma dor aguda quando martelou acidentalmente o seu próprio polegar.

1 ABOVE significa em cima, por cima, acima, sobre, maior de:
