PALAVRAS COMPOSTAS

As palavras compostas normalmente são feitas de duas palavras. Podem ser:

(1)
Duas palavras separadas: swimming pool
(2) Hifenizadas: theatre-goer
(3) Aglutinadas: oilfield

Muitas vezes, as palavras compostas passam pelas fases (1) a (3), por isso, a um determinado momento, podem ser escritas de diferentes maneiras.

(2) Quando o sexo de uma pessoa não está especificado pode utilizar-se his juntamente com her: A student has to maximise his / her chances. Muitas vezes este tipo de frase usa-se no plural para evitar uma estrutura estilisticamente feia: Students must maximise their chances.

A formação comparativa e superlativa de um adjectivo normalmente dependem do número de sílabas que o adjectivo normal tem.

As comparações podem ser formadas adicionando -er, -est ao final de um adjectivo, ou utilizando more / less than ou the most / the least.

ORDEM
Quando vários adjectivos precedem um substantivo, a sua posição depende do seu valor semântico. A ordem mais habitual é:

(1) A preceder estes vêm os adjectivos que denotam opinião (i.e. uma opinião subjectiva), como por exemplo, beautiful, ugly, etc.
(2) Mais do que três adjectivos a preceder um substantivo torna-se confuso.
(3) Este é um princípio geral mais do que uma regra que tem de ser seguida.
